Textual Analysis

Clueless (1995)

Clueless is a film about Cher, a sheltered teenage girl and her reinvention of her new found friend Kai. The plot also includes her going for the wrong guy but eventually ending up falling for a friend.

Firstly the title "Clueless" immediately implies the film is of a trivial tone and doesn't involve any serious drama. The word "clueless" suggests the girls on the poster are unintelligent and haven't experienced many challenges or experiences in their lives. The font of the title is very playful and adds to the ditzy style of the poster.

The image shows three girls standing on the staircase of an elaborate set of stairs all with their mobile phones held to their ears. The fact that they all have phones show that, not only are they spoiled but, also that they are popular. Their outfits are also extremely extravagant especially if they are going to school, which their books would suggest.

Chers placement demonstrates the powerful use of proxemics as she stands on her own, further forward revealing that she is the main character. She also wears a much more vibrant and revealing outfit. Her costume highlights all the cliche attributes of a blonde: Slim body, long legs, skimpy outfit and a big over the top accessory. On the whole the three girls outfits are edging on provocative wearing knee high socks and miniskirts to school. This shows just how clueless they are as your ordinary student would never wear such an extravagant outfit to school. Cher also holds the keys to her own car, this shows the extent to her wealth as not many 17 year old teenagers had their own cars in the 90s. The keys also show its a comedy as the audience instinctively know she will be a terrible driver.

The facial expressions amongst the characters are almost as if they are having their photo taken by paparazzi, this links them to celebrity figures. Whilst Cher (middle) clearly conveys her personality by looking dumbfounded as if she is shocked, Dione (left) poses for the camera with a smug smile drawn across her face . On the other hand Kai demonstrates her newly developed sass by looking away from the camera. The triangular positioning of the characters represent them as a gang and you, as an audience feel intimidated by not only their beauty, but also by their confidence.

The colour scheme on the poster is very bright demonstrating the light hearted tone of the film. The feminine colours, pink purple and red suggests this falls into the genre or "chick flick" and may be a film male audience want to avoid. The spotlight falls on Cher which reflects her status as the most 'popular' girl at school.

Finally the quote on the top of the poster reads "Sex. Clothes. Popularity. Is There A Problem Here?" This quote truly emphises the comic factor of the film. It shows that the teenage girls revolve their lives around these three things most people would consider trivial in their day to day life.
