"Titanic" was released in 1997 after almost 3 years of producing. At the time it was the most expensive film ever made with a budget estimated to be around $200 million. The film was based on a true story involving a sinking ship that ended the lives of more then fifteen hundred people. Rather then focusing completely on the ship sinking, the film revolves around a deep love affair between two people from opposite social classes. Whilst Rose (played by Kate Winslet) takes an extravagant cruise with her family and social circle, Jack (played by Leonardo Di Caprio) scavengers his way on the ship by winning a third class ticket over a game of poker.
There are many reasons why I love titanic. To start with, it was perfectly casted. Leonardo di Caprio, one of the worlds best actors, had the perfect confidence, charm and charisma to fit the role. Whereas Kate Winslets role was to play a young naïve middle class women looking to seek more in her life, rather then marrying an awful man with more money then sense. she demonstrated this perfectly. Kate was an underground actor at the time but her role in the Titanic brought her immediate fame.
The moment Jack and Rose first meet is one of my favourite scenes in the film. Rose is sick of her bland life surrounded by pretentious people so she attempts to jump off the boat. On her route, she runs past jack lying on a bench, smoking a cigarette. You can tell at this point jack has been through many difficult experiences in his life as he handles the situation with great control.
He tells her "don't do it, because i'm gonna have to come in there after you"
They begin to converse and after a near by fall, Jack helps her back over the barrier. This moment is very tense and introduces you to the theme of the film.
Throughout the film there are so many different emotions you feel for the characters as an audience (anger, sorrow, guilt, tension etc.) . I assume this is partly because Titanic was based on a true story, but mainly because you become attached to the characters. You see the journey Jack and Rose go through together and you gain a sense of hope that they will be together forever. This is why It is so tragic when you find they may be separated.
Although the film is 3 hours long, which some say is too long, for me, it is a film where you can sit and be engrossed right from beginning to end. The reason I appreciate sad/ tragic films such as titanic is because I like to feel emotions and be deeply effected when watching a film. I like to be gripped into a drama where you feel something for the characters and I believe this is true more so in Titanic then any other film.
